When I was 4 years old, I traveled with my\u00a0parents to Paris coinciding with the inauguration of the Picasso Museum. When I entered one of the\u00a0rooms I asked for a notebook and colored pencils. I spent the whole morning trying to understand what\u00a0was in front of me. At the age of seven I used to make drawings full of color, animals or people taken out\u00a0from some unknown world. By the time I was supposed to go to college, it was the Spanish painter Juan\u00a0Barjola who encouraged me not to apply to the Academy of Fine Arts.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">My<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">studies<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">as<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">a<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">physiotherapist<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">have<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">helped<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">me<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">a<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">lot<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">to<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">know<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">human<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">anatomy.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">know<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">structure\u00a0of the body perfectly. Afterwards, I started trying deformations and saw that they worked very well. It&#8217;s\u00a0a bit like creating your own body characters, each with their own soul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cycling has also provided me, not only with the desire to go beyond, but also the solitude, freedom, and\u00a0also many landscapes, which have influenced my painting so much. When I used to ride a bike, I entered\u00a0the same state of flow that I reach when I paint. It is very important to me and for my practice, to feel, perceive and keep painting to\u00a0learn how to create new work. those are the little things that inspire me.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Who are the characters in your paintings?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">The<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">characters<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">come<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">out\u00a0<span class=\"s4\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">my\u00a0everyday life and I take them out of context. They could be individuals living with us. When I create them, I always like to imagine where they come from, what they do, where they go, what life they have&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">It<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">is<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">clear<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">to<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">me<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">that<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">want<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">to<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">speak<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">about<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">life<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">on<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">street,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">everyday<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">life,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">and<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">my<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">own<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">existence. And I want to speak about these things with humor, more white than dark humor, more compassionate than cruel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">also<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">like<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">that<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">characters<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">relate<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">to<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">viewer,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">and<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">play<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">with<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">formats<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">and<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">scales.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">go<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">from<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">a large portrait, where the contact with the figure is direct, to panoramas in which dozens of characters seem to be starring in multiple scenes simultaneously.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class='content-img-wrap'><a href=\"https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[154685]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-154696 full-width\" src=\"https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/streetartnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Rafa-Macarron_retrato-12-800x533.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"s3\">A<\/span><span class=\"s1\">lthough<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">your<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">subject<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">engages<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">in<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">daily<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">human<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">activities<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">and<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">has<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">human<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">resemblance<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">they have a more cartoonish quality<span class=\"s3\">.<\/span> What do you aim to deliver through that<span class=\"s3\">,<\/span> and do your subjects stand as separate entities from ordinary people<span class=\"s3\">?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">My<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">characters<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">don&#8217;t<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">go<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">towards<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">caricature.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">flee<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">away<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">from<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">all<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">kinds<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">cartoonish<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">ornamentation. They are born from a fantastic, surreal, and expressionist figuration. I consider them hybrid characters that are closely related to my admiration for Dubuffet, Bonifacio, and Alfonso Fraile. My characters live in a transcended daily life, clean days, sunsets, and fresh air.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What can you tell us about the flat characteristics of your work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have always liked to transgress reality and invent like-cosmic spaces that relate to the characters. With\u00a0flat backgrounds I manage to enhance the figure, and thus give more prominence to the character.\u00a0When it comes to making more worked backgrounds, as it happens with the beach-scene paintings,\u00a0illusions of perspectives are generated, it happens the other way around as in with the flat background\u00a0paintings. I create the background and then I place the figure. I use the extremities of the figures,\u00a0textures, or background elements to break with the flatness and generate volumes, textures, and a\u00a0sense of perspective. Colors also help me create atmospheres, like when I use magentas to generate\u00a0warmth.<\/p>\n<p>The materials used in my painting give me total freedom of expression. The spray gives modernity,\u00a0dynamism, and color. Do they influence your work? How do cubism and surrealism\u00a0come together with expressionism in your art?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Picasso<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">course.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">admire\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Picasso&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">work<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">much<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">more<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">than<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Dal\u00ed&#8217;s,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">for<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">me<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">he<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">is<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">painter<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">par\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">excellence,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">but<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">it<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">is<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">true<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">that<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">sculptures<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">can<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">be<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">a<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">little<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">like<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Dal\u00ed&#8217;s<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">work<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">because<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">my<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">interpretation of the shapes of dogs. But my painting has expressionist features for the immediacy, the stroke is direct, even though I do a lot of sketch work and previous study.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Following up on my last question, how does your work relate to art movements?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">have<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">had<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">a<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">very<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">direct<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">relationship<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">with<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Spanish\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">painting,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">have<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">practically<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">grown<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">up<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">in<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Prado\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Museum,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">best<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">art<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">gallery<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">in<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">world.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">am<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">very<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">proud<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">to<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">be<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">part<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Spanish<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">painting<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">tradition. Goya&#8217;s black paintings have always moved me, and of course Las Meninas by Vel\u00e1zquez, which I consider the best work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My parents are both architects, and I feel that architecture has a very important relationship with my\u00a0work. I have traveled a lot to see art and have visited fairs and museums around the world. I think\u00a0everything I see influences me in some way. I\u2019d like the viewer to relate to my interpretation of reality and what surrounds us. I hope they experience my painting and its characters the same way I do, asking themselves: who are they? What is their life like? Where do they\u00a0come from and, where do they go?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>I am interested in the ephemerity of paintings, do you view your own work as precious? If you\u00a0are unhappy with a work, do you tend to destroy it or would you rather put it in storage for a\u00a0while and alter them at a later date?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No, if something doesn&#8217;t convince me, I destroy it.
